Your Nervous System Has More Than Two Settings

You’ve been told to relax. Take a deep breath. Unwind. And maybe you’ve tried, and found that “relaxing” either doesn’t land at all or leaves you foggy, flat, and further from yourself than before.

That’s because your nervous system doesn’t have just two settings, stressed and relaxed. It has at least three. And the one you’re stuck in changes what actually helps.

The three states of your nervous system

A model called polyvagal theory maps three main states your nervous system moves between. Most of us know the first two. The third is the one nobody talks about.

  • Calm and connected. This is the restful side of your parasympathetic nervous system. Your breathing is easy, your face is relaxed, you can think clearly, connect with people, and digest your food. This is where healing happens.
  • Fight or flight. This is the stress response. Your heart speeds up, your breath gets shallow, your muscles brace, and digestion gets put on hold. Useful in an emergency. Exhausting as a way of life.
  • Shutdown. This is the dorsal vagal state: when stress lasts too long or feels too big, your system pulls the plug. You feel numb, foggy, flat, checked out. You scroll for an hour without noticing. You’re not calm. You’re zoned out.

Here’s the twist: shutdown is also run by the parasympathetic system. So if you’re already shut down, more “relaxation” can push you further in. What brings you back is different from what calms you down.

Why stress lands in your gut

Your vagus nerve runs from your brainstem down to your digestive tract. It’s the main line between your nervous system and your gut, and it carries messages both ways.

When you live in fight or flight, digestion slows, tightens, and spasms. When you slip into shutdown, it goes sluggish and heavy. Either way, your gut feels it first: bloating, reflux, constipation, urgency, or a stomach that just won’t settle.

Chinese medicine has described this for centuries as stress pushing on digestion. Clinically, it’s one of the most common patterns we see. You can change your diet all you want, but if your nervous system is stuck, your gut stays stuck with it.

Try this: cyclic sighing

One of the fastest ways to shift out of fight or flight is a breathing pattern called cyclic sighing. It’s simple:

  1. Breathe in through your nose.
  2. When your lungs feel full, take a second, short sip of air to top them off.
  3. Exhale slowly through your mouth, all the way out.
  4. Repeat for up to five minutes.

The long exhale is what does the work. It switches on the calming side of your nervous system.

This isn’t just a wellness trend. In a 2023 Stanford study published in Cell Reports Medicine, people who practiced five minutes of cyclic sighing a day for a month improved their mood more than people who meditated. They also lowered their resting breathing rate the most, a sign of a calmer baseline. The benefits grew the longer they practiced. Read the study.

But cyclic sighing is built to bring you down from stress. If you’re in shutdown, you need something that brings you back up. That’s where things get interesting.

Meet Five Spirits Restore

We built Five Spirits Restore because no single breathing technique fits every state, or every day. It pairs breath with sound, and it starts by asking where you are right now.

It draws on something Chinese medicine mapped long before anyone said “nervous system”: five aspects of mind and spirit, each tied to an organ. When one goes quiet or gets loud, you feel it, often in your gut, your sleep, or your mood. Five Spirits Restore reads which ones need attention, then tells you whether to settle what’s overcharged or rebuild what’s depleted.

Some days you’ll need to come down. Some days you’ll need to come back. It knows the difference.

It’s free, and it comes straight to your inbox, along with a short series on what’s really driving your stress. That includes the one number that tells you whether any of this is actually working.

Find your state

Your nervous system is talking to you all day long. The question is whether you know what it’s saying.

Get Five Spirits Restore free and find out which state you’re in today.

And if stress has settled into your gut and won’t leave, that’s exactly the kind of pattern we work with at BEING Acupuncture & Wellness. Book a free FIT-Call and let’s talk about what’s really going on.
